Welland Canal Pictures

Map Location 3 Photos

The Welland Canal takes lake freighters and ocean going ships around Niagara Falls, a change in water level of 326 feet. The Welland Canal is about 30 miles long but ships need 11 hours to navigate the 8 locks along the way. Some locks are double (full duplex) so ships traveling in opposite directions can pass thru the same lock at the same time. Other locks, like Lock #8, are single (half duplex) and ships must wait for the lock to clear before passing an on coming ship.
